In the event you’ve been glued to your seat for the past six days,😉 here is the second part of my interview.
WHEN DID YOU WRITE YOUR FIRST BOOK?…WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE?
Although I’d written for television, mostly documentaries, earlier in my life, ACE ON THE HILL is my first novel (completed in June of 2023). So, with only one book to choose from, it’s my favorite.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WRITING?
I like spending time with my children… (I also enjoy) traveling, swimming, reading, and playing guitar. I play guitar like a sketch, rather poorly.
WHAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST SURPRISING THINGS YOU LEARNED WHEN CREATING YOUR BOOK?
The most surprising thing I learned is that—as rewarding as it is to be finished with the writing…(and seeing it) published and available for sale—that’s only part of the journey. The marketing and promotion is tiresome but essential. What good is a book if it doesn’t reach an audience? ...Authors write their books for others as much as they do for themselves.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS (FOR SOMEONE)…TO BECOME A BETTER WRITER?
My advice to any writer is to read as much as possible, especially in the genre in which you hope to write. Also, write EVERY DAY if possible. Even if you end up not including what you’ve written in your final draft, it’s still time well spent. Last, you know your schedule better than anyone, so don’t try to do what someone else does because it works for them. You may not be a night owl or an early riser. Do what works for you.
DO YOU HEAR FROM YOUR READERS…WHAT KINDS OF THINGS DO THEY SAY?
I have seen some reviews from people whom I don’t know, and been contacted directly by people whom I do know. The comments range from “Did that really happen?” …to “Why doesn’t the character based on me have a bigger part?” I will say this, kidding aside, that it has helped reconnect me with a number of family and friends with whom I’d lost touch.
